چکیده

[1] The seasonal cycle and intraseasonal variability of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP) reanalysis surface winds over the Indian Ocean (IO) are assessed by comparing them with in situ surface observations from two moored buoys and winds from the SeaWinds scatterometer on the QuikSCAT satellite. The buoys are located in the central Bay of Bengal and eastern Arabian Sea. Both QuikSCAT and NCEP wind products reproduce closely the seasonal cycle and intraseasonal variability (10–60 day) in the in situ observations. In the equatorial IO, however, the seasonal mean NCEP wind speeds can be 2–3 m s 1 smaller and the amplitude of intraseasonal variability only about half that of QuikSCAT winds. The systematic errors of NCEP zonal winds are comparable to the annual mean or amplitude of the seasonal cycle in the equatorial IO. It is suggested that the systematic error of mean and intraseasonal variability of reanalysis winds is related to systematic error in the NCEP analysis of precipitation.

The Role of the Local Hadley Circulation over the Western Pacific on the Zonally Asymmetric Anomalies over the Indian Ocean

The onset processes of the zonally asymmetric anomalies of convection and sea surface temperature (SST) over the tropical Indian Ocean are investigated with considering seasonal evolution, and interannual variability, of the large-scale convection anomalies in the Asian summer monsoon, using outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), SST, and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. This asymmetric pattern of the co...

A Global Climatology of Surface Wind and Wind Stress Fields from Eight Years of QuikSCAT Scatterometer Data

Global seasonal cycles of the wind and wind stress fields estimated from the 8-yr record (September 1999–August 2007) of wind measurements by the NASA Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) are presented. While this atlas, referred to here as the Scatterometer Climatology of Ocean Winds (SCOW), consists of 12 variables, the focus here is on the wind stress and wind stress derivative (curl and divergenc...

1 Air Sea Interaction Over the Indian Ocean During the Contrasting Monsoon

[1] The air sea interaction processes over the Indian Ocean are studied using the satellite data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Satellite for two contrasting monsoon years, namely 2002 (deficit) and 2003 (normal). The moisture transport for the two contrasting years was also analyzed using the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. Linear correlation coefficient between the convective heating...

Reinitiation of the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation in the Tropical Indian Ocean*

The characteristic features of the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) during its reinitiation period are studied using NCEP–NCAR reanalysis. Based on these observations and with the aid of an anomalous atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM), a possible mechanism responsible for the BSISO reinitiation is elucidated. The western equatorial Indian Ocean along the eastern African...

Asian summer monsoon prediction in ECMWF System 4 and NCEP CFSv2 retrospective seasonal forecasts

The seasonal prediction skill of the Asian summer monsoon is assessed using retrospective predictions (1982–2009) from the ECMWF System 4 (SYS4) and NCEP CFS version 2 (CFSv2) seasonal prediction systems. In both SYS4 and CFSv2, a cold bias of sea-surface temperature (SST) is found over the equatorial Pacific, North Atlantic, Indian Oceans and over a broad region in the Southern Hemisphere rela...
